Discipline-Specific Pedagogies and the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning YELC6251 & 6252

Discipline-Specific Pedagogies and the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning (YELC 6251 and 6252) – 2 credits

Prerequisites: Teaching in Higher Education for Faculty I and II, or Foundations of Teaching in Higher Education, or Instructor Consent.

In this two-semester sequence, early-career faculty work with an Elkana Center advisor to create a structured approach to their teaching development. This sequence allows faculty to reflectively engage with the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) and apply it in their own, discipline-specific teaching practices. Briefly speaking, SoTL is research on the effectiveness of one's own (or another's) teaching. Course participants will become familiar with the literature on SoTL and will be guided to design their own teaching-related SoTL project.

Participants then can elect one of two tracks for the second term as they implement their projects:

  • conduct the teaching-related research they designed, reflect on the results, and draft an article or paper
  • engage in an extensive review of the literature for the topic of their interest, reflect on the results, and draft an article or paper

In either case, this sequence enables faculty to engage in a sustained manner on an aspect of their own teaching where they wish to learn more and develop their course.
